Smash Your Food, A New App Mobilizing Families to Eat Well

Washington-based Food N’ Me™ announces the release of its award-winning, Smash Your Food™ educational game, now available for iPad at $2.99 on the Apple App Store. This fun and exciting mobile game encourages families to smash real foods—burgers, cola, French Fries and entire meals—to learn about nutrition, inspiring healthier food choices while providing parents with personalized emails filled with nutrition advice.

Smash Your Food was the winner of Michelle Obama’s “Apps For Healthy Kids” National Contest and was selected from hundreds of submitted games by industry leaders, including Mark Pincus, CEO Zynga (Farmville), and Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder, Apple Computer. Developers were challenged to “develop fun and engaging software tools and games that drive children, especially tweens (ages 9-12) – directly or through their parents — to eat better and be more physically active”.

The concept behind Smash Your Food was developed by a nutritionist with over 20 years of experience working with children.  A giant robot smashes 40 real foods like burgers, french fries, milkshakes, soda and more. Then it shows how much fat, sugar and oil is contained in each food. I made a lot of wrong guesses as to how much sugar there is in certain foods in drinks, which really made me realize how little we know about the things we consume. For example, I guessed that a can of soda had six cubes of sugar in it, thinking that was a ridiculous number, and it actually had even more! A can of soda has around eight cubes, or 32 grams, of sugar. Overall, I feel like this app could be very useful for families trying to figure out what to cook for dinner or what to order from a menu on a night out! As useful as it is, it is also very fun, and provides a way for kids to learn to about what's really in various foods and drinks in an interactive, technology-driven way.

Face2Face with Therapon, Ulta and More!

What a lovely Saturday last weekend! I woke to beautiful weather and a happy household.

I got up, walked, got dressed and went down to the Desmond in Malvern where I met my friend Jo-Lynne who organized a wonderful pampering morning called Face2Face. There we were treated to a mini-facial by Christina of Therapon Skin Health, make-up by Ulta Beauty and manicures by ladies from a local nail salon.

{Can you believe I actually went OUT OF THE HOUSE without MAKEUP to a room of BLOGGERS with CAMERAS? Now, that's brave, I tell ya.}

And, of course, there were nice swag bags too. I came home with a number of goodies including a 4 step Theraderm Skin Renewal System including: a cleansing wash, fruit acid exfoliant, OPC reparative gel, and an enriched moisturizer. I can tell you now – I am glad they numbered the steps on the bottles.

I've been trying the system the last two nights and it's kind of like coming home after the hairdresser does your hair. You want to do it exactly the same as the expert but you feel a bit insecure the next day. Can I do this? Can I really fit this many steps into my routine?

But, I tell you, ohhh, your face glows when you are done. It feels so nice. I am a convert. At the event, we heard a bit about the background of Therapon and the amazing Dr. Beckman.

James S. Beckman, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon and chemist, a life member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the founder and CEO of Therapon Skin Health®. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1970, followed by a surgery residency at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in 1975 and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee in 1977. Dr. Beckman set up his private practice, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, in 1977 and served there for 24 years. In response to skin concerns voiced by his patients, Dr. Beckman began developing unique products to restore skin to its optimal health and enhance the effects of plastic surgery.

And, here's the morning crowd who joined me! {Another group came in the afternoon. I hear we were a bit more subdued in the am.}

{Disclosure: We were treated to a lovely morning with no obligation to post about it but I because I wanted to – and all thoughts and opinions are my own! ;) }

Additional thanks to swag bag sponsors: Lands’ End for the canvas totes filled with lovely gifts from LunchskinsUnforgettable Moments by PaylessShoesHeartwork OrganizingHappy Family FoodBendables and Divalicious Chocolate Dessert.

LISTERINE® Healthy Habits of A Lifetime Oral Care Challenge: Teaching Timeless Lessons

Our three week challenge with LISTERINE®, REACH® and Walmart may be ending but everything we learned along the way helped us all cement healthy dental care habits for a  lifetime.

We began with a box full of supplies you see in my previous post: LISTERINE® in various bottles, colors and flavors; REACH® toothbrushes and dental floss; and, tips from leading dental experts on Walmart.com.

Brush, Floss, Rinse®. Yes, what a great motto for the whole family. At first, my two teen daughters were a little taken aback with the LISTERINE® Smart Rinse that colors the grunge and bacteria coming out of your teeth when you rinse and spit. Still, both girls admitted to swishing after brushing more than flossing since apparently flossing takes too long in the morning when they barely have time to put jewelry on, which was quite important to my eldest daughter. Who cares about missing or rotten teeth which you can distract with glittering gold? LOL. Yeah, time to get some priorities straight.

Both girls rejected the idea of using a schedule to remember and I was mostly proud of the responses to my frequent grilling:

Did ya brush?  . . . . Yes, mom.

Did ya rinse? . . . .   Yes, mom.

Did ya floss? . . . .um, yes . . . . mom. (Okay, we have some work to do here. )

And, then came the biggest event of all: braces. My 13-year-old has been waiting, not so patiently, for the day she could be outfitted with a mouth of metal to close the gap in her two front teeth.

Because we were already a week into our challenge, the lecture from the orthodontist about the importance of cleaning one's teeth thoroughly came at a perfect time. Then, my daughter was loaded up with more supplies including a thin plastic "needle" to thread the floss through the braces, pulling the floss up into the teeth and out the other side. Very interesting.

Personally, I used the Cool Mint  and the Total Care Zero Listerine. I found that I rinsed regularly after brushing but tended to floss only once a day, sometimes in the morning and sometimes at night. Taking the time to floss is definitely a commitment. I also used a Reach Total Care "whitening" toothbrush and I do think it made a difference in my teeth, which made me very happy! Getting teeth white is hard especially when you assault them with several cups of coffee and tea daily.

My husband was a whole other story. He brushes twice daily and sometimes uses a water pick but he rarely flosses and I don't think he used the rinse but I can't be certain. He usually uses the sink after me, morning and night, so I didn't notice.

Two more side benefits of all this cleaning and rinsing were both the fresh clean taste in my mouth and actually wanting to eat less so I wouldn't mess up my cleaning (which is great for me since I need to lose a few pounds right now.

Thank you, Listerine, Reach and Walmart!

Vicks Behind the Ear Thermometer, Starry Night Cool Moisture Humidifier, and oh, so much more!

Last week, I enjoyed seeing some of my favorite Philly peeps at a Vicks event highlighting many great new products including the snazzy new Behind the Ear Thermometer, the Starry Night Cool Moisture Humidifier and much more!

Love my fellow Philly PSMM moms! (Thanks to Sherry Aikens for the photo.)

After the event, we went home with a bag of goodies for cold and flu season and I am so excited about the humidifier Vicks is sending me. What a great company, I tell ya and I am totally serious which doesn't come naturally for me. To me, Vicks has always meant quality care during sick season and with the humidifier we can keep moisturized in the dry seasons.

We also thoroughly enjoyed hearing from Dr. Meg who shared information on how to keep one's family well in the winter along with her book "10 Habits of Happy Mothers." My favorite section is "Why Mothers Need Solitude."

On page 112, Dr. Meeker says, "We need solitude because it makes us more sensitive mothers. Removing ourselves from constant stimulation and noise actually sharpens our senses." Amen.

But, for now, while I am surrounded noise and a busy, busy life, I find myself talking my temperature over and over and over. Why? Because the Behind The Ear Thermometer we received to take home was just that cool. It takes a second to record and it is so nifty. Why not? It's like Thermometer Candy. I had no idea my base thermometer was closer to 96 in the mornings.

Our new thermometer has a new place of honor by the sink and we've already had a chance to prove to one daughter she wasn't too sick to go to school.

Our thermometer: A permanent new fixture by the sink!

And, then there's the cute little box of Vicks Vapo Rub that my beagle almost chewed into. Saved by seconds.

Thank you Vicks and Dr. Meeker for such a wonderful event! And, for all the goodies to take home.

{Disclosure: I received a bag of Vicks products to keep. All thoughts and opinions are my own.}

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus: Dragon

Last night the Wells Fargo Center treated us to box seats in a suite on the club level to view the one and only Dragon, the latest edition of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey® Circus' Greatest Show on Earth.

Because I have taken my kids to the circus in recent years, I almost said "No" to leaving our house on a cold winter night when there is already much to blog about this week. But. . .

"You know I haven't been to the circus since I was a kid," said my husband, after complaining about my request for him to drive us all across Philly in rush hour traffic. And, I thought, . .  for him . . .  we should do it then. Take advantage of this unique opportunity one last time before the kids are too big.

We got out of the house late with a last rush inside to get the camera he gave me for Christmas and boy am I glad we did. This event was the perfect opportunity to try out the older Minolta telephoto lens on our new Sony camera.

Standing Proud

When we arrived the tigers were doing their tricks and we missed the opening theme acts. I was sorry we didn't get down there early to walk around the animals outside, one of my girls' favorite parts. In the past, coming early, also meant going down on the floor and trying kid-friendly circus tricks or trying on circus clothes. I am not sure if they offered that this year but probably so.

But, we still saw many amazing, heart-stopping feats that show years of dedication and talent.

This act scared me the most for the performers but it was beautiful, filling the center space..

I even thought the elephants looked like they were having fun despite the buzzillion people who say they are living miserable lives. I saw big animals as proud of their performance as the humans working themselves hard and harder to entertain the masses.

These elephants knew how to ham it up!

The circus itself seems to be trying to outdo already amazing feats with adding two hair hanging ladies instead of one, 8 motorbikes in the big round cage, digital screens enhancing all acts and a plethora of new animals in the dog and pony show, including a cat, a llama and a goat.

Upping the act with EIGHT riders!

Dang, how does that NOT hurt?

But, there are still the classic skilled acts that will forever awe and impress!

Always impressive!

And, of course the Asian Dragon theme adds an element of clever martial arts and colorful scenery.

Bong . . . . . I want to go hit the drum!

I was disappointed that none of big elephants made a reappearance in the finale where everyone made one last circle around the ring. They really are amazing beasts. Instead, we got a theme related magnificent gold dragon that I was going to picture here but I don't want to spoil the ending for you!

And, though my husband thought there was down time between acts, I actually thought it went too fast. Oh well, can't make everyone happy. It is still fun and exciting to watch.

You can get discounts to this show in two ways:

By going on ComcastTix.com, save $5 by  using discount code FIRE

The show is in town at the Wells Fargo Center February 22-27, 2012.

Taking the Listerine Challenge for National Children's Dental Health Month

I have spent 14 years ingraining good dental habits into the lives of our two lovely daughters, brushing twice daily. But, I will have to say that I have not encouraged flossing and rinsing with mouthwash like I should perhaps. Apparently, brushing alone misses 75% of your mouth. Hmm. . .

And, then there's my own colorful trips to the dentist where every hygienist lectures me over my bleeding gums after they gouge out every evidence of plaque with their iron arm flossing. My gums have always been sensitive. It got worse when I had babies and I was never good at flossing myself.

And, so, in honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, I've agreed to a three week challenge to join my children in a more regimented routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing twice daily. This blogging promotion actually comes at the perfect time because my 13 year old is about to start braces soooo . . .  developing the habit of rinsing after brushing to get in and around all the metalwork is going to be really important.

You can see in the pictures that we received a whole host of supplies from Listerine® & REACH® for our experience: Listerine® SMART RINSE®  Anticavity Flouride Rinse,  Listerine® TOTAL CARE Zero {Alcohol} Anticavity mouthwash, Listerine® CoolMint Antiseptic mouthwash and REACH® TOTAL CARE toothbrushes and dental floss. (And, a calendar for keeping track.) The mouthwash comes in a variety of flavors and so I see a mouthwash taste testing coming on! And, then there's the cool toothbrushes for Mom with whitening action and tongue cleaners. I will give more detail on these items in my follow-up post once I have used them for awhile.

Tide Coldwater and PILES upon PILES of dirty clothes

Tide Coldwater laundry detergentIn my house, we go through a LOT of clothes for a family of 4. THREE women, need I say more? I have one particular diva who seems to pile up the dirty clothes by the bucket load and I wonder sometimes if that's how she cleans her room (like, giving me back clean pieces just to get them off her floor.)

This little stack of clothes pictured below is about a third of what I have to wash during the week, especially once bedding is included in the mix.

Piles to go before I sleep!

You see that I don't have a lot of room here between the kitchen and the back door where we let our dog out so I have to keep the machine going and going . . .

Since moving in our new house and buying a front loading washer, I've had to get used to searching the grocery store shelves for HE (High Energy) detergent for my Bosch front loading washer. I thought I would love this appliance but mold around the rubber and replacing the electrical panel twice in 6 years hasn't been fun.

All that to say, when I was sent the Tide Coldwater detergent I noticed immediately that it was not HE, which always raises a red flag because you are warned when buying this type of machine that non-HE detergent will suds up too much.

HOWEVER, for some reason, the Tide Coldwater detergent did not oversuds and I was VERY pleased with the feel and small of our clothes.

BUT, the best test is yet to come and **SPOILER ALERT** this was totally gross. I couldn't bring myself to take or post a before picture but this rug you see here had something my dog chewed up all over it. Hint: This is a a bathroom rug that belongs in my daughters' bathroom.  . . . . Yes, my beagle chewed up a used maxi-pad and left the bloody remains. Ugggghhhh. Gross. But, I braved the results and washed it in Tide Coldwater. YES, it worked!! Beautifully clean.

{Disclosure: I received a bottle of Tide Coldwater laundry detergent & a gift card in a promotion with SheSpeaks. All thoughts and opinions are my own.}

Tide Coldwater detergent is specially formulated to help get clothes clean when they are washed in cold water. Switching to washing in cold water is one small step you can take in your daily life to help conserve energy and save money on your utility bill!

Chore Chart for Kids

The New Year is a great time to get {re}organized and get back on track with menu plans, goals sheets and a chore chart for the kids. After holiday crazies, I always start cleaning out my pantry, my junk drawers and of course, all the storage areas from which Christmas decorations were extracted and need to return.

Sure, there's the old paper and pen but there are also some great kids' charts online that take the guesswork out of creating clever engaging ones. For example, I was asked to look over GoalForIt.com and tell you what I think.

After signing up for free, you will see charts for kids and then charts for tweens and teens. I have young teens and so I checked out that one. I need all the help I can get and so do they! They are actually embracing more organization but many days I struggle with keeping them on task because I am busy and don't want to spend my time yelling at them. I am hoping having a chart to reference may actually help.

Goal for It

Picking the age appropriate chart.

{I tried to watch the video describing the charts but my husband recently clamped down on Internet security for the kids which alternately makes me happy but frustrates me because for some reason this domain where the video is stored is blocked tonight and he is not here to unblock it  for me.  ACK!}

So, first (after signing in and selecting the teen chart option), I had to pick the color of my chart.

Goal For It

Picking My Chore Chart Color

Then, came time to add chores. Now, this was fun. I tried to be realistic. Certain tasks are expected of my kids and other tasks are offered occasionally for spending money.

Goal For It

Picking Chores

Some of the options like "nuture faith" and  "family time" seem like more of a message to the parents than to the kids but since ideally parents and teens will go over this together, that is  probably okay. Duh, I  just realized that the pre-created tiles are probably the same for all age goal and  chore charts for all ages. A quick glance reveals that teen options are the same as the  adult goal chart but kids under 13 get their own cute labels. You can also set up rewards if certain chores or goals are met.

After adding a few pre-created options and then creating my own dog-walking tile, I got a little overwhelmed at the thought of tracking all of  this, despite the fact that this is supposed to help get the kids involved and that this is all stuff we do anyway.  Or, maybe I am just overwhelmed at deciding what I want from my kids tonight. I may have to come back to this.

Overall, I see this more usable to parents as a smartphone app which I BET is in the works (so you can think about it and work on it throughout the day). I do like that the kids' charts are printable. Great potential here.
