Neighborhood Toy Store Day is November 12th!

I love supporting local stores and I especially love toys! So, you don't have to ask me twice to support Neighborhood Toy Store Day! Time to go visit a toy store. Here are some more details:

  • This nationwide event, held every year on the second Saturday of November, reminds consumers of the importance of independent toy stores and the value of shopping within their local community. ASTRA members are part of your neighborhood. They care about their customers and take the time to help them select just the right toy to help their children grow and learn through play.

  • Neighborhood Toy Store Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase independent stores' expertise and the important role they play in the community– the difference you find at an ASTRA neighborhood toy store. Neighborhood Toy Store Day festivities allow you to see what your community store has to offer. Shoppers who feel overwhelmed by the size and poor customer service at big box retailers will appreciate the well-edited selection and personal service available at their community toy store.

  • SHOPPING LOCALLY GIVES BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY…

  • Shopping at neighborhood and independent retailers not only increases consumer choice, it also preserves jobs and local character. According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in local, independently-owned stores, $68 returns to the community in the form of taxes, salaries, charitable contributions, children's educational programs and more–in contrast with only $43 dollars when consumers spend their money at a national chain.

Countdown to Reviewer's Retreat! #RevRet11 @Cheapism

In a mere seven days, I will be loading my new little purple traveling suitcase into my car for 48 hours of lots of bloggy fun! Some of my favorite blogging women will be at the 2011 Reviewer's Retreat this coming Sunday-Tuesday.

AND, I will be there myself thanks to the delightful generosity of my favorite money-saving site, Cheapism.com! I love the information Cheapism offers to consumers like me who want the best product for the cheapest price. When you are buying on a budget, it really helps to have the research done for you!

Of course, I am a bit biased where Cheapism is concerned because I am also on their staff of writers for researched product reviews (see car seats, lawn mowers, riding mowers and much more!) and I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing Cheapism grow into the resource it is today.

So, why does one attend a "reviewer's retreat?" A couple of things sold me on this relatively new conference tucked up in the Pennsylvania mountains.

1) I do love reviewing items. Why? Because it means I try and experience things and places I might not have seen or heard of before. And, it's all free! (See the lovely gold trimmed glasses I just received from Wine Enthusiast.com! They arrived a day before the Royal Wedding! Feels like ages ago, doesn't it? But, I felt like royalty using them.)

May2011 018

2) This conference totally has the location going for it! It's not far from me and it's at the incredible Great Wolf Lodge where my family enjoyed a night last year when I won a family guest pass to try it out.

3) Again, it helped that Cheapism.com is partially sponsoring me. Going to these things gets expensive!

4) And, of course, I get to see some of my favorite blogging women and I definitely look forward to making new bloggy friends. There's truly nothing like getting together in person. The web will never replace the value of human interaction. It only enhances it significantly.

And so, between now and then, I will be attending a meeting about student assessments for my classes at the college; I start the summer session for the two online courses I teach TODAY; I will go with Jo-Lynne to a CAbi clothing show {because CAbi ROCKS} and NOT go to the borough council meeting where I probably should be in attendance as president of our HOA since they are talking about vacating a road adjacent to our property so the local Catholic church can improve the road to their land-locked graveyard; I have numerous other child-related errands {like buying new bras for both daughters and they would totally kill me if they knew I wrote this}; AND, I continue to help my husband build the fantastic beautiful IPE wood deck behind our house. And, then there's a weekend full of activities before I make my getaway, not to mention ideas exploding in my head for the novel I am writing that keeps taking strange and twisting new turns. Oh, and I didn't even mention some exciting news about an event I am working on for the Fall – that I will actually keep secret for the moment. (NO, MOM, I'm not pregnant – just filled with new & fun ideas.)

Life is busy. Life is good. Praise the Lord for strength to do all He's called me to do!

(Lindsey is helping Daddy paint the ends of the IPE with sealer. The wood is so hard, he had to order new drill bits after his first three broke over the weekend.)

Spring Break 2011: Painting, Building, Running a 5K! What a week!

We've had such a busy Spring Break I've had no time to stop and share!

For our DIY projects, you can read more about painting Lindsey's room and see the latest picture of our new deck-in-progress by click here: Spring Break DIY Style!

And, here's Team Carmel from our Saturday 5K!

100_2730

(Me, Lindsey, my sister Michele, Laura's friend Natalie, Laura, our beagle Carmel)

Dogs were allowed at the 2010 Sandy Sprint so we named our team after our beagle. Yes, we walked about half of it but we made it!! Our first ever 5K and what a great cause – ovarian cancer research. And, yes, it was raining but our hats saved us. If I ever do this again, I am coming up with a new system for holding things – or leave more in my car. I brought money, my phone, my camera and my keys. The money fell out about 3x and the phone fell out at least once. Fortunately people were actually nice enough to give the money back and the phone survived the fall. My advice: don't bring it or wear zip-up pockets or both!

AND, we signed Lindsey up for horse back riding lessons now through her birthday in June. If it goes well, we might consider extending the experience. For the first lesson, the trainer said she had natural talent – so . . . this might just be her thing. We'll see.

AND, then came Easter on Sunday when we had my in-laws over for a lovely dinner. As Laura helped her daddy on deck construction in the afternoon, Lindsey enjoyed pulling out all the fancy plates and dishes, including the little salt wells and tiny silver serving spoons from my grandmother. It was very lovely and we were fed both in spirit through church in the morning and in stomach through all the food we managed to bring together.

God is good and I am grateful for so many blessings. I hope you had a lovely Easter as well and enjoy these wonderful warm days ahead with all the bright and colorful flowers springing up everywhere.

CLOSED: GIVEAWAY: $100 Visa gift card & our top-secret Philly Rice Krispies Recipe!

Update: Thanks for stopping by. This giveaway is now closed. Winner selected by Random.org is being contacted by email. Congrats Comment #41 (Karen).

This month, Team Philly is competing against 3 other teams in a national Rice Krispies Treat Challenge, the first of FOUR we will do this year. Our designated theme was "Easter" and we had to create a unique Rice Krispies Easter treat with a fun display using even more Rice Krispies.

And, we each get to giveaway a $100 Visa gift card. How incredible is that?! {Rules to win my gift card are at the bottom of this post!}

So, we gathered our pans and our wits and headed over to the kitchen of our challenge captain, Joey.

I knew I was at the right house when I saw the recycling bin full of Rice Krispies Cereal Boxes! Brave Joey had tried one display idea that just wasn't happening. We put our heads together and came up with this fun recipe!

Cocoa Butter Krispies Easter Egg Treats

DSC_0185

Ingredients:

4 Tbsp Butter
3 cups Marshmallow
3 cups Cocoa Rice Krispies
1 cup shredded coconut, sweetened*
1 cup butterscotch chips

Coating: pastel candy melts with speckles

Instructions: Melt Butter in large pot over Medium Heat. Mix in marshmallows and Cocoa Rice Krispies. Turn heat to low as you add coconut and butterscotch chips. Mold into egg shapes and set on tray.

Follow directions on the bag to microwave candy melts until liquid. Dip into melted chocolate, whole or halfway. Sprinkle with colorful sprinkles and pipe with icing as desired. Kids LOVE this!

DSC_0189*Coconut could be optional. Butterscotch is the main taste that tingles the tastebuds. And, these treats are seriously mouth-watering.

But, Team Philly was on a roll! As you can see in the display below, I was working with some serious overachievers and loving every minute.

Cuz Girls Just Gotta Have Fun (Even Busy Mamas) #Debeachbloggin

Just so ya know, here's the conversation going on between myself and one particular tweenager talking from the top of stairs as I sit here at my laptop in the front room of my house.

"Mom, help me."

"What?!"

"I'm becoming girly girl. I can't help it."

"And, what's bad with that?"

"Last summer, I was going around in shorts and barking like dogs [with my friends]. Now, all I want to do is wear make-up and paint my fingernails."

"And, we are so glad about that, at least about not barking like a dog anymore anyway. There's nothing wrong with all that."

*Heavy sigh*

Hair dryer starts from somewhere over my head.

{I am so not ready for this. She'll be 13 this summer. Heavens.}

And, so, I will say that I was very relieved for a getaway weekend at Rehobeth Beach thanks to the tireless energy of Mel, one incredibly sweet and lovely lady, who pulled some serious strings to give a group of about 16 of us blogging mamas a lovely weekend to relax and enjoy a fancy hotel (The Bellmoor) for free night along with a discounted dinner at Dogfish Head followed by a free movie in a private screening room at the local movie theater. Too fun! Some of the ladies took advantage of discounted spa services but we didn't quite make it in time but that was okay. Another time perhaps.

March2011 015I was ever so grateful that Jo-Lynne pulled her own strings with her husband to come with me and even do all the driving. As long as we could find a Starbucks on the way (and she had a special app for that), she was good to go.

The movie we watched was "Eat Pray Love" which was perfect for a weekend when the world went to war and we went to the beach.

*Insert serious prayers for Libya here*

The movie was based on the real autobiographical book written by Elizabeth Gilbert about her travels and personal journey through Italy, India and Indonesia. I loved the saying she learned in Italy, "dolce far niente" or the sweet pleasure of doing nothing. Though Mel gave us plenty to experience, it was all for us to simply enjoy being together and I loved it. AND, I definitely needed it.

But, it was the other saying I tweeted that upped my Klout score by two points after it was retweeted like some 30 times. Must have really struck a cord!

Eatpraylove

Anyhoo, I don't have very many pictures so I am still waiting on Jo-Lynne to post her awesome shots because she is just so good at that!

I do want to thank all the wonderful shops and stores that welcomed us to Rehobeth and to Scott & Aubrey from Southern Delaware Tourism who gave us a special introduction to the area and of course, Morgan from The Bellmoor who gave us the awesome tour. What a fun and relaxing weekend.

Now, back to adolescents talking the woes of growing up, world terrorism, missile launches and life. I'll take another getaway weekend anytime! *Hint. . . Hint*

{Disclosure: We did get a free night at The Bellmoor and lots of other goodies from local stores like the Cake Break who gave us delicious cupcakes as our welcome and the BIG small town bookstore, Browseabout, who gave us a bag of goodies. Thank you everyone and especially Mel! All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Join Me at the The Motherhood's Online Chat in Honor of National Cheerleading Safety Month

For me, cheerleading in high school was fun and it taught me the valuable lessons of  dedication and commitment. You have to be a consistent team player and watch each other's backs (literally) in stunts and routines. You learn a lot about working together to bring out the best in the whole team. If you slack off, the team looks bad. If you work hard, it shows.

This coming Tuesday, you too can join in the discussion about cheerleading as a healthy and positive activity for young girls. Check out the deets below:

{And, if you come join me, I promise to try to dig up an old cheerleading picture by then. Might be scary. LOL. UPDATE: Just found it! Gotta love the perm.} Cheerleadingpict012

ABOUT THE BRIEFING

Date: Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Time: 1 p.m. ET (it will last approx. 30 minutes)
Location: TheMotherhood, http://www.themotherhood.com/talk/show/id/62177  (The briefing page will be live a few hours before it starts on Tuesday)
What: In honor of National Cheerleading Safety Month, Varsity – the leading source for all things cheerleading – is hosting a live video and chat briefing on TheMotherhood.com, sharing advice for parents who want to encourage their daughters to get involved and participate in healthy activity. Nicole Lauchaire, VP Corporate Marketing and Communications for Varsity Brands, and a former cheerleader herself, will be leading us through this fascinating discussion.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

There will be a live feed video player at the top of the Talk page ( http://www.themotherhood.com/talk/show/id/62177 ), in the banner section of the Talk (the black section with the Talk description).  It will look just like a video player embedded from YouTube, but it’s where you will watch Varsity’s Nicole Lauchaire talk on live video feed.

HOW IT WORKS

1) There will be a live feed presentation in the video player at the top of the page. Make sure you press play, are not on mute, and have your volume up to hear it. No need to call a phone line or do anything else to watch. If for some reason it is not playing – be sure to refresh the page!  (You will not be on video – no one will see/hear you.  It’s a one-way feed.)

2) For anyone who is logged into TheMotherhood, you can post and comment in the text-based section under the live feed video player (as you would in a normal Talk on TheMotherhood.com). Nicole will lead off with a live video feed and then, following the livestream, will join the text-based conversation.  We can all engage in text-based conversation, and ask questions of Nicole and each other in real time both during and after the video briefing.

When liquid gold pours from the burning junkpile of the creative mind. #writing

Ever been excited about an idea? Felt it grow in your bones until it has to come out?

Right now, I am working on a novel. Three years ago, I quit work to write stories (children's, teens) but I got sidetracked filling my mind with all kinds of creative endeavors. I did the movie extra thing. I started blogging. I started teaching. I sold kitchen products. I got into politics. I started making real money writing through various endeavors from storytelling to interviews to reviews of products of all sorts (and I am still doing this because I do need to pay off this new laptop sooner than later!).

It's kind of like the omelet my father-in-law ordered at the Valentine's brunch we met them for yesterday. The meal was a buffet and you stood at the omelet bar telling the cook what to mix with the eggs. I ordered bacon, cheese and spinach. It was so good I couldn't eat it all. My father-in-law came back to the table with his plate and told us that his was the junkpile. He had just about every ingredient in it. When you think of a junkpile, you think of a jumble of discarded things. His was a delicious creation of all kinds of goodies chopped and prepped to be thrown into a cooked heap of deliciousness and he ate the whole thing. I have a feeling I wouldn't have liked it but it was his thing and to him it was good. But, someone had to chop those pieces and someone had to stand there and cook them. He simply had to decide what would taste good.

But now, a novel has burned its way through the junkpile of my subconscious and I find myself dreaming up conversations in my sleep. I get to be the sous chef, the cook and the creator. As plots thicken in my mind, villians flirt with heroines while I curl my hair for Sunday church. And, I run downstairs and add post-its upon post-its to my storyboard.

And yet, life goes on. I still have to make a living. I love teaching. I need to write (for a living). And, yet this story is writing itself.

So, what's all the excitement about? Think blogging with a sinister side: ego involvement, competition for brand recognition, a media mogul so driven for content he will endanger the lives of his own children for it, a mom so driven to protect her privacy and yet she can't help herself vlogging about it, another mom blogger who turns out to be a dad, and several more characters caught in the middle when the story peaks at the annual blogging conference. Who really is the bad guy? That's what I am trying to find out. I can't wait to read this story. But, oops, I have to write it first.

This book is ultimately about the things in life that give us a false sense of security (blogging and beyond) and those who really give us a reason to be insecure. What security measures are valid or reliable? Where should we put our faith? On whom can we truly rely or trust with our lives – here and eternally?

Throw in a couple of hidden cameras and you've got internal and external conflict brewing for the world to see.

But now, to catch the gold dripping from my mind and mold it into preciousness. It does me no good on the floor. It takes work to form molten gold into something of value. Time to get out my tools. It also takes risk, confidence and a journey.

Have I given away too much? I don't know but I do hope you will get excited with me. This will be one heck of a fun ride.

I met a homeless man today. His name was Steve.

People enter your life in the oddest moments. Some you forget as soon as you look away, as if they are merely a prop in the background of life. With others, the memory lingers. Looking back, it's kind of like old Scooby Doo cartoons where you could tell where the action was going to happen by the bolder colors. The background would be muted but the one trap door where the boogy man was coming out would be brighter than the rest.

Today, I had a package to mail. After dropping off the girls at school, I parked in front of the post office, in a rarely empty spot, and had about five minutes to spare until they opened. I went inside with my key to the Homeowner's Association box. I wondered if I would find checks or complaints about the extra $20 we had to charge people this year. And then my mind wandered to the outrageous bill from our new landscaper who says he used a snowblower three times more than we even had deep snow. I respect that he's a small business owner creating jobs for locals but this stinks of a scam. And, so I've got that to deal with this week as the association president.

A postal worker warned me to be careful as I entered the lobby. He was mopping up salt residue left on the floor by snow boots and sneakers carrying in remnants of our last snow from the outside. A thin African American man sat in the window sill with a friendly open look on his face.

He looked at me as I tiptoed around the mop and through the lobby to the little alcove of mailboxes at the back.

"It's cold out there, isn't it?"

I politely nodded my head as I walked.

"Imagine sleeping out there in it."

I nodded my head again and gave the appropriate sigh of sympathy. At this point, I had my mail and he had a captive audience for the next three minutes until the mailroom doors opened and I could disappear inside to mail my package.

"I used to have a job. I worked at the hardware store making $45,000 just two years ago. They laid everyone off but me. . . . I was running the show. Then, I didn't have a job. Now, I've lost my place . . . . My son is living with my mother. She's got too much family sleeping on floors already. Told me to take care of myself. . . .My ear drains constantly. It smells real bad." Lovely. I probably wouldn't be eating breakfast either but at least I had a choice.

"I pray but I must have done something bad in life somewhere." What do you say to THAT? I made some remark like maybe God had a purpose for him there on the street – maybe someone he would help. Lame perhaps but it was the first thing to come to my mind. Who knows.

Then, I racked my brain for a few suggestions. Shelters I mentioned were too full. Another one had a 40 person waiting list apparently. The local free clinic wasn't taking any more clients, according to him. Too many to take care of already.  The local foodbank needs an address for him to receive food. He needed a roof over his head.

"He's been helping me figure out what to do," said Steve, gesturing to the sympathic worker behind the mop who looked back at me with a quiet smile and nod but didn't say a word. And then, talking into his lap, Steve said, "I rummaged through the trash for breakfast this morning. Wonder where I could get a donut."

The doors swung opened. I ducked my head inside and asked the man behind the desk about Steve. He said he didn't know but had seen the guy for a couple of days. "Sounds smart." I didn't have time to buy the man breakfast so I took out an extra $40.

Heading back throught the lobby, I asked him his name. "Steve" came the reply. And, I told him I would be praying for him and I gave him the $40. It wasn't much and he first tried to refuse but I insisted. I don't know his history or what he'll do with it. I hope he'll eat.

I know the poor will be with us always. I open my latest booklet from Compassion with technicolor pictures of poverty and destitution. I read about survivors still making their way through the rubble of the Haitian earthquake. My heart hurts for them. My heart hurts for Steve. I pray. How can I help? I have bills to pay too. But, I remind myself how little they have and anything I can give is something. That's why I sponsor a Compassion child and read the booklets when they come in — so that my heart will ache for them and so that I can share with you and so your heart will ache for them too.

We must pray and we must give of what we can because God tells us too. It's as simple as that.

Luke 12:48 "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

My prayer today: May your heart ache for those who are hurting. May Steve have some glimmer of hope in his circumstance. May the Holy Spirit give us discernment where to wisely give and where to save.

{Update: I talked to a neighbor later. He remembers Steve running the hardware store. Wow. There, but by the grace of God, go I.}
