Travel: What you will see as a Disney VIP

I was multi-tasking during this year's Disney Social Media Moms Conference, thanks to the awesome Rayovac outlet centerpieces and despite the warning by the adorably hilarious Mary Ellen Hooper to turn off my cell phone, when somewhere off in the distance a voice broke through my conscious, halting my attempts to compose an semi-intelligent email on the small screen of my Droid in a dark conference room.

"107, anyone? 107?"

"Oh, Oh, Oh, Me, Me, Me."

107 was the lucky little number printed on a conference badge I wore around my neck and the very same number just pulled to win the V.I.P tour of Disney World! Yeah, wow, is right! Here I was invited by my dear friend Jo-Lynne to come to this awesome conference and I won the BIG prize, to go in any park on any ride with a special front-of-the-line tour guide for SIX hours.

Woohoo!!

But, that's not all. In a move not that far from rewards you see on the  TV show Survivor, they told me I could invite not ONE, not TWO, but up to TEN people on the tour (including myself).

Because so many others were already booked on other awesome tours, like the African Trek (which I am totally doing that next year if I get invited back) or they brought their own families, I took only two others but I was not disappointed with my choices! Thank you, Debbie and Amy. You make great park buddies! {Missed you, Melissa and Jo-Lynne!}

Debbie and I stopped by the Yacht Club gift store to become real Disney Tourists!

You can see us almost being blown away below. (Just kidding. That's the Disney Magic Shots which are so way cool!)

And, because, we were provided with a very cool tour guide, Lorie, I wanted to share some of the tips I learned during our time at Disney on a celebrity worthy 6 hour guided tour.

Whew, almost lost our friend Amy there.

1) Go left, everyone turns right in lines.

2) Go early to favorite rides, especially the Pirates of the Caribbean ride which does not have a fast pass.

3) Getting a VIP tour means skipping long lines and getting through the park quickly where you can then relax in shows or at one of the many awesome eating places later in the day.

4) Work around the shows you want to see. Pick shows before or after your tour if you really want to take advantage of the rides.

5) Stand to the middle left in the haunted mansion. For some reason, it's the better place to be.

6) Star Tours has over 50 different scenarios. It's come a long way since I was younger.

7) Ask Disney photographers who aren't walking around with live characters about "Magic Shots," animations they can add to your photos. For example,  the balloons you see above, Tinkerbell, etc.

8) Getting a VIP tour also means a private car delivers you into parking spots park right behind rides and you walk right into the park like a celebrity. No long walks or tram rides.  A mirror on the way in reminds employees, "Who are you keeping safe today?"

9) But, getting a VIP tour does not mean you will get a view of the underground happenings. But, then again, we didn't think to ask either.

10) You are also responsible for your own food.

11) Normally this privilege costs $300/hour and we had a six hour tour!

12) Relax and enjoy. Ask lots of questions! The tour guide has lots of great insights for the same or future visits.

And, the tour guide drove us right up to the last dinner of the conference at the new Art of Animation Resort where we reunited with several Philly women! We have to go a long way these days  to see people from our own back yard. Fancy that!

Philly Women Reunite!

Check out all the photos of our tour on the embedded Flickr Stream below. I was trying out my new Sony camera from Christmas and captured some excellent shots of all the topiaries created for the Epcot flower show too. {I was so happy to meet Sony rep Drew earlier in the trip who showed me some tips on how to use my Sony a65!}

What a truly magical adventure!! If you can afford it, go for the VIP treatment!!

My daughter wore a buddy from  Shoulder Buddies® to school the next day. Her comment: "No one said anything. I guess when strange people do strange things, noone notices."

Shoulder Buddies in Action!

Then, JUST as we were leaving after a day  of walking and talking, we stopped by the Educational Insights booth and met the creator of TriTective™ who gave  us a copy of this unique 3-letter mystery game! We also received Blurt! and the 7 Habits of Happy Kids Games which we are still trying out.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus: Dragon

Last night the Wells Fargo Center treated us to box seats in a suite on the club level to view the one and only Dragon, the latest edition of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey® Circus' Greatest Show on Earth.

Because I have taken my kids to the circus in recent years, I almost said "No" to leaving our house on a cold winter night when there is already much to blog about this week. But. . .

"You know I haven't been to the circus since I was a kid," said my husband, after complaining about my request for him to drive us all across Philly in rush hour traffic. And, I thought, . .  for him . . .  we should do it then. Take advantage of this unique opportunity one last time before the kids are too big.

We got out of the house late with a last rush inside to get the camera he gave me for Christmas and boy am I glad we did. This event was the perfect opportunity to try out the older Minolta telephoto lens on our new Sony camera.

Standing Proud

When we arrived the tigers were doing their tricks and we missed the opening theme acts. I was sorry we didn't get down there early to walk around the animals outside, one of my girls' favorite parts. In the past, coming early, also meant going down on the floor and trying kid-friendly circus tricks or trying on circus clothes. I am not sure if they offered that this year but probably so.

But, we still saw many amazing, heart-stopping feats that show years of dedication and talent.

This act scared me the most for the performers but it was beautiful, filling the center space..

I even thought the elephants looked like they were having fun despite the buzzillion people who say they are living miserable lives. I saw big animals as proud of their performance as the humans working themselves hard and harder to entertain the masses.

These elephants knew how to ham it up!

The circus itself seems to be trying to outdo already amazing feats with adding two hair hanging ladies instead of one, 8 motorbikes in the big round cage, digital screens enhancing all acts and a plethora of new animals in the dog and pony show, including a cat, a llama and a goat.

Upping the act with EIGHT riders!

Dang, how does that NOT hurt?

But, there are still the classic skilled acts that will forever awe and impress!

Always impressive!

And, of course the Asian Dragon theme adds an element of clever martial arts and colorful scenery.

Bong . . . . . I want to go hit the drum!

I was disappointed that none of big elephants made a reappearance in the finale where everyone made one last circle around the ring. They really are amazing beasts. Instead, we got a theme related magnificent gold dragon that I was going to picture here but I don't want to spoil the ending for you!

And, though my husband thought there was down time between acts, I actually thought it went too fast. Oh well, can't make everyone happy. It is still fun and exciting to watch.

You can get discounts to this show in two ways:

By going on ComcastTix.com, save $5 by  using discount code FIRE

The show is in town at the Wells Fargo Center February 22-27, 2012.

Weight Loss, Quilting and Hugging My Teenagers: New Year's Resolutions

Everyone is writing about New Year's Resolutions and for all our SEO sakes, other bloggers are NOT dieting but they do know what makes a popular search item this time of year.

For me, I AM dieting and I do plan to lose some serious weight in 2012 because I let WAY too much pile on in the last three years. Gotta love turning 43.

Life is good, too busy for exercise and yet, it's gotta be done. I gotta move the tush. Move it, move it, move it. But, what really matters is tracking it all. It's the only thing that has ever made the difference: tracking calories, tracking exercise. I have always needed accountability.

On New Year's Eve, a friend suggests the app My Fitness Pal. I love it. And, then I got a friend request. Oh boy, my twin brother wants to share in the accountability. We'll see how THAT goes. Hopefully we can keep it civil. You ate WHAT?!

{Oh, this is rich. He sent me a message: "Cheater!" He thought the tiny update said "Sarah jogged" for the last 5 days instead of "Sarah logged" my entries for the last 5 days. I am so NOT the jogger. Another new resolution: start jogging.}

One a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

But, my personal dieting plan isn't just a commitment to eating less calories. I also plan to take the vitamins I left behind about the time my behind starting growing. And, I was sent Slim Select which uses saffron to abate hunger. I have no idea if it really works but knowing I am putting something in my body intentionally to help me diet also works on my brain. I need to make this work. It's a mental thing.

{Update: Down 5 pounds! Plateaued this morning b/c I didn't exercise yesterday. Must go walking later!}

Quilt in the works

Fat Quarters

And then there's quilting. I loved learning to quilt just before I got married. Work, kids, other hobbies took the place of my fledgling sewing efforts. But, the old Singer is coming out of retirement. The picture here shows some fun fat quarters just waiting to be trimmed, cut and sewn! I have a special plan but you will have to wait and watch the progress! And, the square packages and batting squares are for easy-sew flannel quilts that will be fun projects with my girls, who I plan to spend the year hugging more than ever! It's hitting me that there are mere years before college and I need to enjoy every moment! I am collecting variety of quilt images on my new Pinterest board, a fun new way to curate images on the Internet!

Last but not least, it is hitting me that I have two teenagers now and it won't be long until they are in college and we are empty nesters!! Time to hug and squeeze my girls more than ever and plan some one-on-one time with each {as I mentally scream to the one who just tried to talk to me – "I haven't finished this post in days. Can you JUST give me a few minutes?" Oh, the irony.}

And then, there's working at the college – I am teaching a new class this Spring on "Freelancing & Shameless Self Promotion" from which I hope to post weekly updates as I develop each topic. And, I have been and will continue working for the very vivacious Debbie Bookstaber in public relations for the lifestyle and toy industry. It's going to be a fun year (hopefully without the 2011 roller coaster of deaths & drama mixed with incredible new job & lifetime opportunities. At some point, I have will have stop and thoughtfully reflect on the sheer craziness of last year but time is at a minimum for quiet reflection these days – yet ANOTHER lifetime resolution.)

Happy 2012 all! It's a presidential election year. Should be interesting! Oh, and learning to use my fancy new Sony a65 camera is a whole 'nother post for another day!

My lovely young ladies and Carmel, our beagle

Saturday AM Christmas Brunch with author Stephanie Hubach of Same Lake, Different Boat (Coming Alongside People Touched by Disability)

This Saturday I am hosting an annual women's Christmas brunch at 10 AM  at which we will hear from Stephanie Hubach speaking from her experience and book chronicling the life of a mother faced with a disabled child. This event is being organized by Grace and Peace Presbyterian Church and will be at my house. Anyone is welcome to come (but please do RSVP)! Babysitting is provided.

To get ready for this event, I've been sneaking in snatches of reading time on the Kindle which holds the e-book version of Same Lake, Different Boat. Stephanie shares both endearing stories of raising her son who was born with Down's Syndrome and practical tips on how to deal with the related challenges and blessings. I am excited to have her come and I would love a great turnout. This is in my house so space may be limited and I don't want to put my address out here on the Internet. Please contact me if you are interested in coming!

Christmas Tree, Egg Nog and . . . Vaccines?

Ahhh . . Finally a minute to breath . . . and to blog! It's been truly the busiest Fall in many years with my teaching and recent work in the PR world and yet, I am still  a blogger at heart, a person who loves to craft thoughts and words into shareable snippets.

A blogger always has a post in the back of their brain, waiting for it to mature, to grow and when ready, to publish. Today, as my family and I prepared for our annual Christmas tree hunt, I thought deeply about vaccines. Yes, you heard me correctly . .  vaccines  . .  . of all varieties.

"Let's go cut a tree," says my husband.

Oh, oh, . . . I need to write a post about that trip to GlaxoSmithKline I went on several weeks ago.

"Everyone . . put on your boots and warm jackets," he reminds.

Wait, let me just find that email. Where is that picture of the women who stayed to tour the plant? Got it! Download quick and save for later. Couldn't stay the whole time because I was called during the plant orientation in the morning to be a movie extra down in Philadelphia for the next three days and I had to hurry home and rearrange my life. I've lived my life trying to help others. Being a movie extra is purely for me. I love it. But, there are scientists out there really helping people: perfecting vaccines, keeping them sterile, making a difference. Helping people "do more, feel better, live longer." Where do I fit in?

Bloggers Get a Tour of GlaxoSmithKline Vaccine Plant

"Where was that place we went years ago?" my husband continues, Christmas trees still on the brain.

Yeah, uh huh. Where are those vaccine stats? Got them. Quick copy and paste into my draft post for later.

"Okay now, girls, the truck is ready to go!"

Vaccines have changed the landscape of medicine. Check! My girls got all their vaccinations. Check! Check!

"Can you check the map? I think we made a wrong turn."

Statistics roll through my head like movie credits. How will I make them relevant? How will I make people care who have decided vaccines don't matter?

"Found the tree farm!"

Before vaccines, parents in the United States could expect that every year:

  • Polio would paralyze 10,000 children.

"Do you want Douglas Fir or Fraser?"

  • Rubella (German measles) would cause birth defects and mental retardation in as many as 20,000 newborns.

"Where's the $10 off coupon we printed?"

  • Measles would infect about 4 million children, killing 3,000.

"Do you like this one or this one? Who wants to saw?"

  • Diphtheria would be one of the most common causes of death in school-aged children.

"Anyone for hot chocolate?"

  • A bacterium called Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) would cause meningitis in 15,000 children, leaving many with permanent brain damage.

"Let's go set up the tree!"

  • Pertussis (whooping cough) would kill thousands of infants.

"Where are the lights and ornaments?"

Wait, didn't Catherine send a Babble article about parents who are choosing not to vaccinate? I faithfully watched as nurses stuck my children with needles, visit after visit … until the HPV Gardisil vaccination. Too new, too untested, too many reports of adverse affects that may or may not be substantiated. Doctor wasn't happy with me. I said no. I still support all the others. People in other countries are dying without these vaccines that have made us forget these horrible illnesses took massive numbers of lives once upon a time.

"Mom. . . . . come see the wreath Daddy and I made from the leftover greens cut from the bottom of the tree!"

Lovely, just lovely . . . my healthy, robust darlings, fully vaccinated and so very full of life.
