MOVIE GIVEAWAY: RIO Blu-Ray x 3

This week I am giving away not one but THREE Blu-Ray copies of the movie Rio. {Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win one!}

Rio New Poster This movie flashes on the screen in bright technicolor with multi-color birds singing and dancing. I can totally see this script adapted to Broadway. It takes twists and turns as Blu, the main character– a blue macaw, is thrown out of his element twice (once when he is taken from the jungle and once when he is taken back to Rio.) In the beginning, he is fortunate to find someone to love him unconditionally when his own home is no longer an option. Later, he is blessed to discover that, when wrenched from his comfort zone, God has provided "angels" along the way to help.

I enjoy taking movies we watch and applying them to our faith and how we can live more loving, Godly lives. For this movie, an actual discussion guide with scripture is provided which I have attached if you want to click here to Download the RioDVD_Guide. There's also a fun activity sheet for kids you can click here to download: Download Rio_activity_sheet_toucan_play_games.

In the discussion guide, three major topics are covered: Being a Christian Means Taking Up Your Cross, Seeking Forgiveness & Making Amends, and Embracing the Struggle of Life. Each section has applicable verses and "lessons to learn." An example I don't see here is a connection to the life of Joseph and his coat of many colors in the Old Testament of the Bible. He, like Blu, was sold into "slavery" but God had a plan that worked for the good in the end. Even in the worst of times, Joseph was exactly where he needed to be for God's work to be perfect. It didn't mean that there weren't tough times along the way; but again, Joseph, like Blu, was true to his calling and his morals, never forgetting the past while he created a new future.

Sometimes it's fun to simply watch a movie to experience the beautiful escape from the drudgery of life and this one is certainly colorful and fun; but, the discussion guide encourages families and groups to take it to the next level. How can we apply the powerful principles to our everyday lives and to that of our children? How can we make it real and walk away truly inspired?

Do you ever use movies to teach a principle to a group in your life? I like to use them in my Communication Theory class at the local college. It's a great way to start discussion and have some fun and I think this one might have to be on my list for the Fall.

Here's the official synopsis, in case you were wondering what the movie is about:

 Synopsis

RIO is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the "Ice Age" films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another – and that she's a she – he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it's far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life's many wonders. RIO brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance.

CONTEST RULES:

LEAVE A COMMENT HERE to win one of the three Blu-Ray copies I am giving away!Tweet, Facebook or other for more entries. Leave additional comments here to tell me each thing you did to help spread the word!

Contest Ends July 29th.

CLOSED: The Rice Krispies Summer Challenge is On with $100 Giftcard Giveaway

UPDATE: GIVEAWAY CLOSED: I was informed that I needed to pick a winner TODAY and so the giveaway is closed. Winner #36 is Melinda from Look What Mom Found . .  . and Dad too! Congrats!

Once again, Team Philly came together this week to create a Rice Krispies themed treat and fun display in coordination with an entire year's promotion through The Motherhood. This was our 2nd challenge and we get to give away a $100 gift card AGAIN! [See rules at the bottom of this post!]

If you didn't see our first challenge with Easter treats and a totally awesome video by Joey, click back HERE.

BUT, what was the theme this time? Ahh, summer activities. Of course! So, our teammate Zareen came up with a clever camping theme and we all took it from there. I was team captain this time so I had to go buy the huge stash of Rice Krispies and marshmallows and butter along with all the necessary decorating supplies. {And, I really should have read the recipe better because now I have a refrigerator drawer full of butter. I wish butter made a better giveaway prize.}

IMG_1176
(Tara, Joey, Sarah, Zareen)

We made several items in our display which I'll explain better as we go here. You see on the far right our original s'mores recipe which sits in front of our Rice Krispies fishes. On the left is an iced "watermelon" Rice Krispies cake and skewers with traditional treats and jumbo marshmallows, and finally the centerpiece: a firepit of Rice Krispies logs and burnt marshmallows for coals with colorful red and yellow licorice for fire.

IMG_1166

Our main never-before-seen ORIGINAL Rice Krispies treat recipe was as follows:

3 T Butter

4 cups mini-marshmallows

6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal

3 cups Milk Chocolate Chips or 1 bar melting chocolate for dipping.

1 tsp-1 T Corn Oil, if necessary

1 box Graham Cracker Crumbs

1 jar Marshmallow Creme

1 pack Wooden Skewers

Make traditional Rice Krispies treats, melting butter and marshmallows before taking off heat and mixing in cereal. Spread in a buttered pan to cool and cut into rectangles. Put sticks into one end of rectangles.

Melt chocolate in a double boiler, adding corn oil to thin if necessary, and dip one end of Rice Krispies into chocolate or spoon the melted chocolate over the sides to cover one end. Dip the chocolate covered Rice Krispie in Graham Cracker crumbs and set on wax paper.

Decorate with a thin line of Marshmallow Creme along the edge. Add more Marshmallow Creme for additional taste and flair.

Here we are "roasting" our S'mores Rice Krispies Treats over our Rice Krispies Firepit made from Cocoa Krispies Logs.

IMG_1154

IMG_1157
Here's our watermelon cake which is basically the Rice Krispies Treats traditional recipe molded into a circle and iced with red and green icing with chocolate chips for seeds. (After making this, I took another one to a party this week and it was a BIG hit!)

IMG_1132

And, finally, we had to have all the food groups with our "fruit", "protein" and dessert. These fishies are made from more of the basic recipe cut into these shapes. We then added chocolate chips for eyes before attaching them to straws with paperclips and worms for bait. Too cute!

This was definitely a fun and tasty theme to work with! Our recipes aren't overly complex but hopefully they are kid friendly and easy to recreate!

Come check out more about the Rice Krispies Making Memories Challenge on The Motherhood. Peek in on all four competing teams! All the team members are giving away $100 givecards! I'll add my team giveaway links here once their posts are live!

What does rosacea have to do with winning a trip to the Emmy's?

April is Rosacea Awareness Month and I have noticed an increasing reddening of my skin when I wake up so I wanted to learn more. I have a friend who claims going off coffee helped clear her skin. I don't know if I can touch that one. Mama needs her coffee.

Bluecar But, in honor of rosacea awareness, I also want to let you know that Redbook is offering a Red Carpet Ready sweepstakes to readers who want to enter to win a trip for two to walk the red carpet at the Emmy's on August 6, 2011. And now for some interesting facts about roscea: Images
  • April is Rosacea Awareness Month, which was started by the National Rosacea Society to help educate people about rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition characterized by flushing, redness, bumps and blemishes on the face.
  • Rosacea often goes undiagnosed or is mistaken for other common skin issues such as sunburn, allergies or acne.
  • Rosacea affects 16 million Americans, many of whom don’t know that they have it.  If you think something is going on with your skin, head to the dermatologist.
  • Rosacea can be triggered by common foods, environmental and emotional factors, so educate your readers about how they can avoid them.  Common food and drink triggers include alcohol (especially red wine), cheeses, caffeine, hot beverages and spice food.  Cold or hot weather and wind can cause rosacea flare-ups, and stress, anger and embarrassment can also be triggers.  The good news is that rosacea is treatable and your dermatologist can help.

So, we gathered our pans and our wits and headed over to the kitchen of our challenge captain, Joey.

Talking Safety & Healthy Participation on the Cheerleading Squad (& #GIVEAWAY CLOSED:)

Update: Giveaway is closed. Thanks for stopping by! Congrats to my giveaway winner, Kim.

Today, I co-hosted a talk over at The Motherhood in honor of National Cheerleading Safety Month where we talked about cheerleading as a growing sport among young girls. But, just like any sport, it is important to take safety seriously.

As a part of this talk, I am giving away a Varsity cheer tote, water bottle and blanket. So, please keep reading for details below to comment for a chance to win!

Here are some important points brought up in today's talk:

When should girls start cheering? Any age that a program is available.

Why should girls join a cheerleading squad? Just like other sports, it builds confidence and self-esteem and lowers drop-out rates. Many girls who are cheerleaders also feel comfortable taking on other leadership roles.

What if girls don't make the squad? Try other sports like dance or track or look for local All-Star and gymnastics programs.

Does my child have the right body type? Multiple body shapes and sizes are needed for a successful squad. For example, lightweight small kids are needed for the top of the pyramid while stronger taller kids are needed for the bases.

Are modest uniforms available? Check out the selection of uniforms at Varsity. There are many to pick from.

Here are some takeaway's from Varsity's Teen Survey:

  • Safety Comes First: As part of national cheerleading safety month, we wanted to address the issue of safety. Every injury is one too many. Safety is the biggest priority for our cheerleaders and coaches.
  • Varsity is doing a lot to promote cheer safety and injury prevention, but we need to do even more to keep cheerleaders safe as it evolves.
  • Survey Stats: Varsity surveyed 1,016 teen girls ages 13-18 to represent the roughly 14 million teen girls across the United States
  • 65 percent of high school girls participate in a school sport
  • Participating in athletics helps teen girls make new friends (86%) and gives them a built-in support system (65%). For example, compared to the average teen girl, cheerleaders are more likely to hold leadership positions
  • What to do to make sure YOU (or your child) stays safe:
o Know the rules for your school, college or all-star division/level
o Ensure your squad has a Rehearsed Emergency Plan and has practiced it
o Only perform stunts, tumbling and routines on appropriate surfaces
o Warm up before stretching, jumping, tumbling, stunting and dancing
o Only attempt new skills in the presence of a skilled instructor
o Take the iCheerSafe pledge, which asks cheerleaders to commit to their responsibility to cheerleading safety

Personal Notes:

I was cheerleader (see picture HERE) for one year in high school. I'll be honest. I wasn't the most coordinated child. I didn't make it the second year. It is a leadership position and you have to focus so you don't make mistakes that can hurt others or yourself (in terms of stunts, etc.). One of my "don't try this at home" moments happened when I tried doing a backbend in my carpeted room, with no spotter. I landed on my head where a ball of wax came loose and hit my eardrum. I had to go to a ear specialist to have it removed.

But, I enjoyed the work-out and coming up with new cheers. It was extremely painful when I didn't make it again. I didn't turn to another sport. I instead turned to community service and was awarded for my efforts. I still wish I could have been a cheerleader again.

So, I encouraged my daughter to join when she showed an interest this year. She had done some gymnastics and had the body for it. She just didn't have whatever the coach was looking for in terms of "cheer" personality. She made the alternate squad – which means she was welcome to join the practices and learn the cheers but not get a uniform or go to games. Since communication is often word of mouth, she missed practices and eventually lost interest. Again, it was tough seeing her go through this but then she started track and is really enjoying it. I realized that part of the problem in the missed cheerleading practices was her shyness. She didn't want to ask the teacher what was going on.

Cheerleading does take a unique person who is already a little outgoing and is willing to perform in front of a crowd. But, that's true of most sports where you have to block out the audience and focus completely on doing the best job you can do. I do think it builds confidence and it is a great opportunity for kids who get to do it. For those that don't, there is plenty out there to participate in. Don't give up!

GIVEAWAY Rules:

1. Comment here for a chance to win a Varsity Cheer Tote, Water Bottle and Blanket. And, feel free to share your experiences in the whole cheerleading realm.

2. Tweet, blog, Facebook or subscribe to this blog for more chances to win – and of course, come back here and tell me you did it in separate comments.

3. Contest runs through this Friday, March 25, 2011.
