Review: The Bible: The Epic Miniseries on Blu-Ray

The Bible miniseries

Over ten million viewers tuned into the History Channel this year as each Sunday brought on a new episode of the 10-part The Bible: The Epic Miniseries
depicted on film thanks to the commitment and efforts of actress and producer Roma Downey and Executive Producer Mark Burnett. The last episode including the resurrection of Christ aired fittingly onscreen on Easter Sunday.

Everybody I knew told me how great it was week after week. I, however, do not get the History Channel, much to my angst, which is why I was so excited to get the Blu-Ray version of the entire series for review shortly after the last episode aired.

The Bible series includes stories from the Old and New Testaments including Noah’s Flood, the Exodus, and the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Five hours are from the Old Testament and five from the New, capturing some of the more dramatic moments in the Bible.

I have heard good and bad things about the series but I am grateful that the producers had the nerve to share the story of Christ and to open the doors to discussion.

The “good” is easy to see in the quality of the filming. The dramatic effects leave little to want in terms of engaging characters and quick-moving action. You don’t get a chance to be bored, whatever you think of the story itself.

In terms of the story, there was at least one dissentor I read who thought more should have been told of the redemption that Christ brings, taking on our sins through His death and resurrection. But, again, the fact that this series exists gave that writer the opportunity to add the message about redemption to the online conversation.

Writer, bloggers, pastors, vloggers all have the opportunity to build on what The Bible: the Epic Miniseries started and fill in the gaps. Yes God loves us so very much and I appreciate Burnett and Downey being committed to sharing that message. God loved us so much that He sent His only son to die for us and to be raised up in our place, to be our intercessor before God Himself. That is some powerful love.

It’s even more powerful how He forgives us our faults and flaws OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER. I am humbled and in awe because I certainly don’t give people nearly the chance that I expect God to give me on a daily and hourly basis.

The  Bible: The Epic Miniseries Blu-Ray comes with a downloadable FREE YouVersion Bible App, which I have on my Android phone and use to read scripture during church and to get daily Bible messages. To get the Bible app, head over to to read the Bible for yourself. We all need a little more inspiration and conviction in this world!
