Lunch w/ the National Center for Learning Disabilities #Dyslexia

Recently I attended a luncheon put on by my Philly friends Whitney and Colleen to learn about the work of the National Center for Learning Disabilities and their dyslexia education program. We watched clips where popular TV shows highlighted the issue of dyslexia and heard from Dr. Sheldon Horowitz about some of the issues people with dyslexia face.

What I found fascinating was that I got a box of fiction books in a bag given to all of us. I pulled them out and gave them to my very excited kids. The set was the first three books in the Percy Jackson series. When my daughter asked me where they came from, I told her and she immediately responded, “Well that’s because most of heros in the story all have dyslexia because they are demi-gods. The series started with bedtime stories the author told his kids at night, one who has dyslexia.”

They knew more about the series than I did, which isn’t surprising but I found it interesting. Dyslexia is becoming less and less of a mystery but that doesn’t stop parents from being devastated to learn their child has a learning disability and extra measures will need to be taken to help the child through school. Fortunately, many resources are being created to help diagnosis and manage the issues but they still need to be understood and implemented in many ways.

Some of the great take-away quotes from Dr. Horowitz showed up on Twitter throughout the event via the “hashtag” #dyslexia and the ID: @LDorg :

  1. Thank you so much for sharing & spreading the word Sarah! I love that your daughter knew why we got the Percy Jackson books too – sometimes our kids really do know more than we do!

  2. Neat blog! Is your theme custom made or did you
download it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make
my blog stand out. Please let me know where you
got your theme. Thanks a lot
