Interview with Selena & Joey

Today I had a chance to join a multi-mom conference call with the stars of the new movie Ramona & Beezus which I am sooo excited to go see because it is based on the much beloved series by Beverly Cleary that I grew up reading! I can't wait to share the adventure with my girls.

(Answers are somewhat summarized & questions were asked by multiple participants. I couldn't get everything but hopefully you will enjoy what I did have time to type!)

How do your parents help you stay grounded?

Joey -Parents say: You started off at 4 yrs old. You have to not get a big head. It doesn't get you any farther in your career. Selena is very humble.

Selena – It's all about surrounding yourself with good people. My mom always says "whoever you hang out with becomes who you are. If you change, I'm taking you back home."

How have you managed to stay out of the bad press?

Selena – It is hard because teens are a big target. It is sometimes unfair but I guess, it is just part of the job. I am one of the most boring teenagers you will meet. I love being with my mom who is my best friend.

What's it like working with all those big actors?

Joey – It was great. Everyone was soooo nice and everyone was comfortable with each other.

Selena – It was cool because they are so much more experienced than us and they made us feel comfortable.

Do you get any health or beauty tips from the older actors?

Joey – I didn't really need any b/c I am a kid;)

Selena – Jennifer was a big help.

Are you headed off to college?

Selena – not yet because my next two years are planned out but I want to attend a culinary school. I just graduated [high school]

Did you improv any of the scenes – go off-script?

Selena – yes, we would talk about the scene as if we didn't have lines and go check the lines and work from there.

{To Selena} As a Hispanic American, many children will look up to you. What can you learn from Beezus to be an example?

. . . As the character evolves, [growing up] gets easier.

{To Joey} What do you think sisters can learn from Ramona and Beezus?

There is no one closer than a sibling and you have to trust each other.

What do you want people to learn from this movie?

Selena – I would hope it helps people go out and strengthen their relationship – especially sisters.

What helps you be away from home?

Joey – I always bring my blanket.

Selena – I always bring my mom. I set up my iMac the other day to a iChat with my grandmom.

What has prepared you for this role?

Joey – My sisters were in [acting] but my mom prepares me [for this role] by reading my lines and going over them with me.

Selena – I read the book and was able to step right into the project. I try to consider what works for my fanbase.

{To Selena} Do you like TV or movies better?

Selena – that's hard. I love making kids laugh and do the TV show but with movies I can be different character too.

What were your favorite scenes to film?

Joey – water fight and bedroom scene.

Selena – bedroom scene – a sweet tender moment.

More to come on Monday after we go see it!!
