Enjoying the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City

Swimming through the ocean with the dolphins in a simulator, roared at by larger than life IMAX dinosaurs and dissecting real mollusks were just a few of the things my girls and I enjoyed at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City on Saturday.

We stopped on the way from our house to pick up my sister and head north. I understand that we were very close to where the plane went down in the Hudson but we couldn't see it.

Arriving a little late, we were greeted warmly by the ladies in charge where we gathered in the Jennifer A. Chalsty Center for Science Learning and Teaching. (We were there on Sat. because of our affiliation with SV Mom bloggers. Thank you SV Moms! Read HERE for a recap from other moms. There is also a giveaway and coupon codes for discounted entry at the same site. Go check it out if you live nearby!)

Offered yummy cookies, juice and water, we began our tour of the massive center. A lot of moms were in the room watching the live animal show. The snake looked pretty fierce so we headed out to see other floors. My girls were too old for the Elmo show and the liquid nitrogen demonstration wasn't starting yet so we walked up to the next level.

We made our way through an interesting exhibit about energy created by wind, water, sun and other natural elements before going into an IMAX show. My small crew was offered an early show since we were interested and ready to go in.

The IMAX is a HUGE doom shaped movie theater where animals come at you like they are alive. It is always fun to experience. We saw the sea monster show, following the life of prehistoric sea animals. Different films were showing at different hours.

On the fourth floor, we enjoyed the live animal tanks. I could tell my girls were getting tired when my daughter snapped at me for helping her too much with the various exhibits. I wanted to play too!

Nearing the end of our allotted time, we went back to the starting room where once again the ladies in charge greeted us warmly and gave us a Liberty Center carry-all bag and PR information on a thumbdrive (very clever) and, upon my daughter's request, walked us back up to the simulator where it felt like we were swimming with the dolphins when the car moved up, down and sideways as a screen in front showed us the actions of a filmed dolphin swimming in and out of the water.

We ended up at the gift shop, OF COURSE, which had many cool educational items to choose between. Laura picked colorful Mars clay while Lindsey got a mood necklace. I only allotted them $5 each which was PLENTY.

I ran into one NJ Mom blogger, Lynette, who I recognized but that was it. It was hard to socialize when you were basically following your child's whims through a huge educational scientific playhouse. It was similar enough to the Franklin Insitute in Philly that I would probably head there first from where we live but the day was DEFINITELY worth going and we recommend the science center to anyone who lives nearby and wants a cool day with the kids.

Bloggers Converse over Coffee and Bible Study

CoffeeWant to hear the conversation at our Bible Study today? (with 3 out 4 women who are bloggers) I wish I could have taped it. So rich in so many ways!

"We really should be focusing on Bible study here but isn't it fun to talk about blogging? I mean, I can say it so much better there."

"I would tell you about my day, but first, well, did you read it on my blog?"

"No, not yet."

"Okay, well, here are the cliff notes but it really does sound better the way I wrote it but this way you get the facial expressions so let me tell you now."

"Wait, do you think Peter meant we shouldn't want to be Super Bloggers when he talks about humility and seeking God's glory instead things that feed our ambition and pride? I mean, where are we going with all this?"

'Well, we know we want to live in God's will and blogging helps us get out the stories in our heads and we aren't doing anything against God's will. In fact, we are connecting with other women who are Christians around the world. It's a good thing."

"Okay, but did you see my new shoes on my blog? Well, let me show you in person. They look much better in person."

"Hmm. . . I don't have deep discussions or shoes on my blog. Maybe I should do something more interesting. Do you want to see the products I got in the mail to review? I need a quote."

"Are we ever going to get back to Bible Study? Maybe we should have a group blog about it? It is about grace after all, no not about Grace sitting here at the table but standing firm in the Grace of God."

"Speaking of standing firm, how do these new jeans look? Should I wear them to Blissdom 09?"

And, so the day of spiritual nourishment, fashion tips and kitchen product reviews ended with all the bloggers satisfied with the real-life connection of offline meetings. Prayer was said to cover all the ills of bunny trails and to take us back into our own publically private worlds where we will write cathartically and get out the quips and quirks of our families, our faith and our fortitude (okay I don't know what that means but it rhymed. Can you tell I'm Presbyterian?).

On Getting It All Done

There are a few steps I am going to have to take today if I am going TO GET IT ALL DONE. I am sharing them with you so YOU CAN GET IT ALL DONE!

1. Ignore Twitter, Facebook and every other social media tool that sucks me into the wrong programs on the computer where I am not working on the serious stuff that I need to get done.

2. Forgive myself for NOT posting a picture yesterday, for not adding it to the Wordless Wednesday carnivals and for not mentioning it on my blog.

3. Prioritize. Decide what is paying the bills and work on that first.

4. Take breaks to change the laundry or turn the crockpot down from high to low so my roast won't overcook.

5. Finish this post so I switch over to my Open office word program and start writing about two incredible women I interviewed last week.

6. Put aside all other thoughts and distractions as I focus, focus, focus.

And that is it. Gotta run. Go check out Shannon's fun post on vintage pictures at Rocks in My Dryer where you can read more tips for life! I missed the Mr. Linky round-up yesterday but what can you do!

Please also check out Reviewsings where Jo-Lynne and I are ending a couple of great giveaways tomorrow and starting more next week. My last Frugal Living article on food costs can be found at the Phoenix if you care to keep browsing the 'Net.

Convergent Blogging Series #1

Tonight I will be teaching a class at a local college, called Writing for the Media. I will be introducing the concept of Convergent Journalism in which many journalist and media outlets are feeling the pressure to be savvy across multiple media, with a specific focus on digital platforms, to exist successfully in today's world.

I do feel that many points introduced in the book can be applied to blogging, since so many media outlets are blogging and so many bloggers are getting involved in media.

In the first chapter of the text, "Convergent Journalism An Introduction: Writing and Producing Across the Media" by Quinn and Filak, we learn that there are five types of convergence that can be identified today:

Ownership Convergence — media outlets owning TV, radio, websites, etc.

Tactical Convergence — content sharing among reporters, journalists, etc.

Structural Convergence – teams creating all written content for repackaging for each media

Information-Gathering Convergence – multimedia reporters

Storytelling or Presentation Convergence – at level of working journalist (Mobile)

In the blogging world, there is definitely all of the above. There are blogging sites that incorporate video, podcasting, reporting, storytelling, photography, etc. Those sites are often seen bringing in specialists (or focus-driven bloggers) in each field to help cover certain tasks or topics.

Tactical convergence in blogging is seen through sites linking to other sites that share the same information. Often whole posts are committed to sharing links that relate to specific topics being discussed through the blogosphere. Bloggers are known for designating days where others bloggers with similiar information can link to the host so that anyone and everyone can see who is participating.

Because blogging can be so personal, much of the convergence I am seeing seems to happen on the level of the single blogger because it is the individual who must know a little of everything, from good information gathering to good storytelling to well placed photography to creating video clips to how to edit with a qualified eye at the end.

The idea of structural convergence, information gathering, and storytelling meld into the individual blogger's mind. He or she must decide how far they want to go to promote a site which may or may not pay anything, except perhaps in promoting another commodity or employer where they already work or in traffic-based paid ads which pay fairly minimal fees. Are they pulling all this information together for their own creative outlet or for pay in some form? Monetizing a blog is an entirely new post that we will discuss another day.

As with journalism, the blogger must be able to discern good information from bad, a good editing tool over a bad one (i.e. photography or video editing) and a good story line versus one that readers could care less about. Bloggers who know how to do this, especially with good writing and editing skills, become the super bloggers.

The disadvantage an individual blogger faces is that there is no outside editor (unless you write for a site converging bloggers from various backgrounds and then the creator of the site may edit or have editors in place, often for no pay). Having no editor means no one outside oneself with a trained eye to sift the common hurried mistakes, know the AP Style Guidelines, and no one looking over the shoulder of the blogger just to make sure false information is not being disseminated.

But therein lies the freedom and joy of blogging. No one is paying you so no one can complain. They just might not come back to read more. It is one of the more obvious examples of blogging supply and demand. Give readers what they want, they come back. They are not paying anything either. Give them what they don't want, they go away.

There are so many more bloggers out there now then used to be, but we'll leave competition, marketing, social media and PR for another day also. There will be plenty more blog fodder on this topic in the weeks to come!

Thank you for stopping by!

Giveaways, Vlogs and More . . .

Teaming up with Jo-Lynne over at Reviewsings has been WAY fun. Today I uploaded a video of the girls and me making Auntie Anne's soft pretzels from a kit sent to us. I think I'll upload it again here, despite it's many faults! I am learning as I go here.

There are also some great giveaways over at Reviewsings from handpainted kitchen tools to make-up travel luggage to a self-warming computer mouse. Go check them out HERE!

Time for Prayer

The gift of time is a beautiful thing. As our PresWIC (or Women in the Church) President, I am planning a prayer retreat on January 31 for the women of our PCA presbytery. I was totally overcome with detail anxiety this last weekend. THEN, I realized today that it is actually THREE weeks away instead of only TWO weeks. Time is truly a delightful gift.

Just knowing that I have more time to spread the word, work on the music, flowers, food, decorations, registrations and basically everything went a long way to calm the nerves. Of course, the panicked calls to several incredibly Godly women with soothing sweet voices that said "I'll help" and "call again if you get stressed" also went a LONG way to lifting the temporary feelings of inadequacies and insecurity about being in charge.

During the course of the day retreat, we will sing, hear testimony and spend a lot of time in actual private prayer. I really want it to be a beautiful and God-glorifying day to the women who come. This retreat covers eleven local churches and we are using one to hold the event. I went on Saturday to see how another event, called an Epiphany Tea, was held. All the women came together to create a lovely, worshipful, reverent day. And thus my sudden anxiety attack!

All those little questions start to crowd the brain: Will our retreat be as lovely? as worshipful? as reverent? as glorifying to the Lord? Have I thought through the details to make it so? Will the food be okay? Should we have flowers, a color scheme or nametags? Who is getting the journals, papers, pens, and speaker gifts? etc. etc. etc.

Early in the planning, I had several excellent options fall through when I realized that God was impressing upon my heart "This day isn't about easy, it is about me." I was considering a main speaker, a retreat center and numerous options that would have upped the cost significantly and we just didn't want to do that to these women for our first ever day retreat for our presbytery, a new one created when the larger area presbytery separated into several smaller ones for ease of management.

After having several conversations with a couple of prayer warriors, women who have led prayer retreats and work in local ministries, I am at peace with the flow of the day now and I believe the women will be blessed with the time spent in the Word of God, praying and rejoicing in Him. Our theme is Rejoicing, Renewal and Refreshment.

So, please, if you think about, lift me, the planning team, the day, the details, and the attendees up to the Lord in prayer over these next THREE weeks! I would greatly appreciate it.

Sweet and Sassy Girls

Today, my girls were invited to  join a friend who won two Peppermint packages at the Sweet & Sassy Little Girl Salon & Spa. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story, except to say that my girls were in little girl heaven in a big girl kind of way – with facial, manicures, pedicures and updo's. We moms were totally jealous. The girls couldn't believe they were getting face masques. It was truly perfect for little girls on the cusp of turning into big girls, getting to experience the joys of womanhood — still surrounded by the little girl aura of bright pinks and colorful EVERYTHING.

The girls didn't ride in the pink limo, which was fine with us since that was an extra cost, but we did end up at Bucca Di Beppo in the same shopping center for an incredible birthday dinner. The Italian art was freaking out my little girls' innocent eyes which was pretty funny. Guess they have to get used to classic sculpture someday. What a fun day.

Frugal Living at Its Hairiest

Since last summer when I dusted off my old copy of Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover, I have tried really hard to balance our budget, be more responsible financially, give when I can and move towards the ideal of saving.

I even started writing Frugal Living articles for my new column in the local paper, The Phoenix, as a reminder to myself to live more frugally and responsibly every day. (See HERE and HERE.) Because I am trying to pay down debt and save money, I avoided taking my girls to get their hair cut as long as possible. They don't like getting their hair cut and I hate spending the money. But, last night, it just got to be too much. Since the New Year, I have been on a cleaning spree – attacking closets, shelves and little girl rooms. Being in the get 'er done mood, I finally decided, enough was enough. It would cost a little more than I usually pay but the result was worth the expense.

Booking a 7 PM appointment, I skillfully avoided telling my daughters where we were going. Fortunately, the library is right down the street and we had a few books to return. Checking out a new stack, we headed to the car. I drove the direction of home for about a block and then turned back around.

"Mom, where are we going?"

"Oh, I don't know," I replied as I pulled in front of a large sign proclaiming "Hair, etc."

"Oh, no, oh, no, nuh-huh, we're not going in there, no way!" wailed two little pre-teens.

Promises of "only a trim" convinced the girls to exit the car and head in, despite glum faces.

An hour and TONS of detangling spray and Redkin creme later, my beauties and I emerged, all smiling. My girls really aren't opposed to looking good, they just hate what it takes to get there. I really tried to convince my oldest to get the 6 inches taken off for Locks of Love but she didn't want the shoulder length hair — so only 2 inches came off the long golden mane. My other daughter had about an inch taken off her strawberry blonde head.

I desperately need highlights and a cut now but I'll wait my turn until the budget allows next week. I am definitely getting SOMETHING done before Blissdom '09, the blogging conference for women that promises to be VERY fun and informative. CAN'T WAIT to see you lovely ladies. I've been saving my pennies!

Wordless Wednesday: Meeting Other Bloggers

The holidays filled quickly with fun events, seeing lots of family & friends. At one event, a blogging event nonetheless, I got to ask two incredible bloggers (and friends) what they learned from blogging.

2bloggers

Colleen and Jo-Lynne

I thought video might not be considered wordless so I added in the picture ABOVE I captured from the video BELOW of Colleen from Classy Mommy and Jo-Lynne Musings of a Housewife, taken at the Graco-sponsored Christmas bloggers party held at Colleen's lovely house. (Thank you, Graco, for the awesome set of Rubbermaid! Good to see you lovely ladies again.)

Lots more great Philly Mom Bloggers and other local bloggers came by for a wonderful time of meet-and-greet & incredible treats and I feel terrible for taking so long to blog about it!
