Happy New Year Everyone!

I would love to spend hours poring over old posts and give you the highlights of the last year but time does not allow for it today. Suffice it to say God has blessed us richly in family, friends and experiences that we will remember for a lifetime. 2008 was an incredible year of connecting with new and old.

This is my last official post of 2008. I am sure with NOTHING going on New Year's Day you will hear from me again. Feel free to tweet, e-mail, say "Hi" because my family and I are staying home. It will be the perfect day to read a novel, contemplate resolutions, do more cleaning out and enjoy the peace and quiet of time with family. Maybe we will even drag out a few board games.

I just realized that I have nothing special planned to cook. Oh well, we might be starting off the New Year with leftovers of all the days of entertaining this last week. But, that's okay too because 2009 is going to be the year of "NO" until debts are paid off, weight is lost and we perfect what we said "Yes" to in 2008 (blogging, podcasting, seminars & conferences, writing, etc.).

I do want to wish you ALL a Happy New Year. See you in 2009.

Ephesian 6:10-13 (NIV) "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, stand."

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY: Wheel of Fortune Fun

UPDATE: Works for Me Wednesday Post on "Kid's New Year Resolutions" is HERE! The previous link to this post from last week's Wordless Wednesday loaded automatically in the Mr. Linky link form and I didn't catch it. I hate it when that happens but I appreciate your patience! Please go check out the correct link. Sorry again.

I am combining a product review with Wordless Wednesday. Is that totally terrible?

Disney has come out with a board game for Wheel of Fortune, using Disney movies as their theme. The online description reads:

Disney Wheel of Fortune includes such classics as Cinderella, The Lion King, Snow White, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc. and Toy Story. It is a combination of two all-time family favorites. Combine the puzzle-solving fun of Wheel of Fortune with the magic of Disney-Pixar movies and you get a game that's entertaining for the whole family. Spin the Mickey Mouse wheel, and then ask for a letter to the puzzle. Categories include: Heroes and Heroines, Villains, Movie Titles, Song Titles and more. Collect Disney dollars for uncovering letters and solving the puzzles. Game includes Mickey Mouse wheel, three interchangeable sections, Disney characters frame, 24 puzzle cards with 96 puzzles puzzle board with backing, two legs, Disney play money, wipe pad, rules and solutions booklet. For two to four players.

As a mom of many toys, I'll say some games come along at just the right time. My girls, age 10 & 11, keep pulling out this game to play with each other and friends.

My girls' ages were perfect for this item since they have seen most of the Disney movies. A few still stumped them. To make it the most fun, you really do need a host or someone not officially playing to check the answer when people guess. If two are playing and someone has to check, that person is immediately out. The Disney Wheel of Fortune is easily put together but it was a little tricky taking apart for storage since the cardboard backing slips into tabs that need to come undone when you are putting the game away.

Regardless, the girls still enjoy this game. The price seems a little high at $25 but it does get the whole family involved and creates an opportunity to get away from the computer, TV and DS games.

First Day as a Frugal Living Columnist

See HERE for my first ever Frugal Living Column in the local paper, the Phoenix. Ignore the picture. Apparently, the story would have to be taken offline to change out the shot. I am hoping to get a better picture up soon. This article is about using the Dave Ramsey book "Total Money Makeover" to makeover my own frugal philosophies. Tomorrow's column is about Boxing Day and giving. I'll link to it when it goes live!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! The paper was late arriving last Wednesday and I kept watching to see if it had come. I was on the phone when I noticed it innocently sitting in the driveway, wrapped in plastic and rubberbands. My friend had to put up with the squeal as I opened the paper and there it was!! My first day as a newspaper columnist and on Christmas Eve! What an early present. I started last year wanting to be a writer. It took a year of blogging, writing, networking, and much more but life finally came back around.

I give God all the praise and glory for these wonderful things. Here's to a fun 2009!

Holiday Memories of 2008

Tonight we had our last party before the New Year. Tomorrow I get to take down the Christmas decorations and wrap them carefully until next year- between cleaning my office, writing a feature story and starting the syllabus for my college seminar starting in two weeks.

Every year my husband's local high school friends reunite to welcome one particular out-of-state friend that moved to Florida with his family after several other moves. Between family gatherings, we plan a night to converge. Tonight was my year to host the shindig. Eight adults, 11 kids, a crock of meatballs,a plate of brownies and four 2-liter bottles of soda later to name a few, everyone parted ways after a lovely evening of catching up and sharing a years' worth of stories. We got on Jo-Lynne's new laptop and added Laurie to the neverending online social network called Facebook so that we can communicate through the internet a little easier.

Jo-Lynne and I are the wives of two of the four high school friends (Paul and Brian or The Handyguys) who went to church and graduated together oh so many years ago. Denise was the only girl in the reunion that grew up with these guys and she came with her husband and two children from about an hour away.

With kids running in all directions, we thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship of friends. I told them about my writing and the exciting twists and turns of 2008. Denise shared her memory book of the massive 40th birthday party Phil threw her over the Thanksgiving weekend. Laurie shared with us the video of their new home in Florida and Jo-Lynne let us borrow her new Apple laptop which is totally sweet.

A good time was had by all.

The whole week has been quite nice actually. After Christmas, we headed up to Brian's sister's house for a night stay and a country club lunch celebrating the December birthdays of all three adult women (me, his sister Linda and his mom).

Sunday, my sister and her husband, Steve stopped in for pot roast. Michele brought DELISH cheese biscuits made from a Paula Deen mix bought in the Paula Deen restaurant down south. She gave the girls Webkinz which they totally loved, among other things. Brian and I received the amazing gift of tickets to be in the audience of the next Survivor Finale in New York. How fun is that?!

And so we wind down and slide into the New Year, stuffed and ready to destuff. I am ready to clean out, organize and get on with an exciting new position as college professor of journalism, a weekly commitment as a frugal living columnist in the local paper, and many more rewarding opportunities I see coming down the pike. I have a Focus On Prayer Retreat I am planning for our women throughout the presbytery on January 31st. The blogger Blissdom '09 conference is the next weekend in February. March holds a PCA leadership conference and that is just the first quarter of the year. I really do have to get more organized.

I have looked over at Jo-Lynne at many events lately and said, "2008 was a REALLY FUN year."

She looks at me and says,"And 2009 is going to be even better!"

Praise the Lord!

VLOG: Laura's Cookie Creations

Laura is showing us her fun cookies for a class "bookshare." We got the idea for faces from a clever book on cupcakes. The one with the little lifesaver mouth is the main character Creel who gets scared after seeing a dragon. Enjoy! (For more "I See What You're Saying, Christmas Edition" go see Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee!)

Sharing the Christmas joy!

Thought I would finally post some pictures from the season:

100_0619 100_0622 Here's my pineapple sculpture for the ladies Christmas tea! Either they loved it or hated it. I certainly had fun making it. After cutting up the fruit, I needed somewhere to put the strawberries so I stuck toothpicks in them and started sticking them into the pineapple top. My girls helped and we filled it no time. What's your vote? Is it a keeper?100_0631

My original plan was to use wooden skewers to make a flower fruit display but I forgot to buy the skewers and ran short on time. You can be honest, how bad is it?

Here are the lovely collectible dolls sent to my daughter, Lindsey, from my awesome Aunt Pat who gathered them for many years and is ready to see them light up a little girl's life. Lindsey filled the dollhouse which my husband Brian made for her when she was younger. WHAT a Christmas! Lindsey loves Barbies but she is also at an age to appreciate collectible ones that shouldn't be opened. THANK YOU, AUNT PAT!

What a week this has been! I've been getting ready for Christmas and it just hit me that NO ONE is coming over and we are going NOWHERE! WOW. We are travelling the next day and hosting several events after that but ON Christmas day, we have it all to ourselves. My husband finally won after 14 years of marriage. All he ever wanted to do was to stay home and enjoy the day quietly together. We have always entertained or gone somewhere at some point in the day. Not this year. So, now what do I cook?

40-something starts now

And so the next decade begins. I am turning 40 today. Some people wouldn't tell you when or how old but seeing that I have spilled my whole life here, why hold back on this one?

I am having a quiet day today – a day to contemplate the future, remember the past and move into the next phase of my life with prayer and rejoicing. There is so much still to do and see. Life is good and getting better. Praise the Lord.

I could sit here and type more but I am really feeling the need for coffee RIGHT NOW.

If you have a birthday near the holidays, what are you doing to celebrate and make that day special?

God's Big Little Moments

Today was a life-changing day. No, I didn't get my hair highlighted or my toenails painted, though they could use a fresh coat. In fact, if you looked at me yesterday and today, you really wouldn't see the difference. But a big change did happen to me today. I became an official college professor — of journalism nonetheless.

I have always love the academic world, learning and growing with each book and paper. When a friend called me on Friday to tell me about the chance to teach, I wondered how I could compete with what she brought to the table. She told me about the opportunity because she actually couldn't take it. She has years of journalistic work behind her but her daughter is sick and she has to travel to see her. The rigors of academia simply did not fit into her schedule right now.

I started to think over what I could offer the position and found a promising list of things I had done and could research and add. Complimenting that list, I realized that one of the best things I have, that isn't a personal talent but a blessing anyway, is an encouraging friend who will be teaching at the college herself. One of the most beautiful experiences in life is to have someone who believes in you and gives you the confidence to knock on doors and even walk through when they open unexpectedly. I saw her this last weekend and she gave me reassurances that I could take this new step. This whole exchange between the friend telling me about the opportunity and me going to talk to the dean happened in one weekend.

This morning, when I was talking to the dean, I thoroughly enjoyed discussing the use of online sources for media related topics. The world has exploded since I was in school and the kids want to know the latest things. Now research is at our fingertips with Google and other search engines. It is truly amazing.

We talked about the syllabus and the book I would use. At the time (and I am talking mere hours ago), a book had been proposed but it was out of print and a new one needed to be selected. I was told that the librarian was looking into some options.

Around nine, I said my goodbye to the dean, tucked my official application under my arm, and went to meet a friend for lunch. We went to a store that she loves which sells pressed metal items in all shapes and sizes (also known as Wendell August Forge). Afterward, we started to wander through the other stores, ending at Barnes & Noble. I thought I would look at some books on journalism just to see what they carried.

Okay, I know this is getting long but be patient. It really gets good now. A man named John DeDakis was standing in the store with his brand new book, "Fast Track." I started asking him about the book and he said it was about a woman pursuing the story behind the mysterious train/car crash that left her orphaned as an infant. His eyes lit up as he summarized the plot and added in a few tantalizing details to grab my attention. Though I am a sucker for any mystery book and the plot sounded fascinating, my eyes were stuck on his card on the table. He was a senior copy editor for CNN. When I told him I had just been talking to a local college about a professorship in journalism, he not only shared that he had been teaching the same class for the last four years but then named the text he used and some of the special projects that he assigned. I was blown away! What timing.

When I got home, I saw a couple of e-mails about the different books the librarian found that might be possible to use. One was the exact book the author-editor mentioned. I was so excited. Here was the answer to the course book and a confirmation from God that I am on the right path, following His will for my life and part-time occupation.

It is so cool to see God's hand in every little detail of our lives like that. I NEVER go to that store and probably won't be back there any time soon. Just at that moment, when I needed that specific input, there was a man with the exact answer I needed. It totally gave me chills the whole way home. Praise the Lord for His mysterious timing in big little moments.

Vlogging 101 (or Video Blogging 101)

On GenMom Reviews, you will see my first attempt to VLOG (or create a video to show online) with my new FLIP MINO video camera. You will even see WHO gave it to me and why. I was really tempted to reshoot the first attempt but I realized that it will give me a good starting point because IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER!

In the video clip of me thanking WAHM Talk Radio for giving me the FLIP MINO, I found that 1) my daughter, my camerawoman, moved WAY too much, 2) the lighting was bad causing the picture to be fuzzy and 3) when I uploaded it to YouTube it caused funny breaks in the video stream — but that might just be my computer when I am watching it.

For problem 1: MOVEMENT, I realized the need for a simple tabletop camera stand. It takes the pressure off anyone holding it and keeps the picture still. A higher flat surface works too. Anything to keep it steady.

For problem 2: FUZZINESS & LIGHTING, I need to make sure the light is behind the camera not behind my head. I am hoping that will resolve the fuzziness. I also notice a HUGE fingerprint right on the front of the camera. Again, my newbie camerawoman was doing her best but there are definitely some precautions I need to take to make it look right.

For problem 3: ONLINE SERVICES, my friend told me that Vimeo was recommended over YouTube for uploading videos and embedding them in my site (which is done in a couple of easy steps). I found however that Vimeo could not upload the file when YouTube had no problem. What I need to investigate is why Vimeo was thought to be better originally and whether it would do a better job eliminating the online breaks in service that I saw on YouTube. Hmmmm. (UPDATE: 4 days later, I got an e-mail that the Vimeo video was ready. It took forever to upload but it does appear to be a better quality. Another person suggest using NewBaby to upload videos.)

Have you tried Vlogging? What did you find?
